"You who have seen this love’s payday of wild toiling and sweet agonizing, you know being born is important."

Carl Sandburg

Susan Lawler, LM CPM

Now offering midwifery care in Hawaii as well as Washington state!

The first birth Susan ever attended in a supportive role was in 1991 witnessing the birth of her niece. She found herself in awe and inspired by how important being born truly is. Soon after Susan found the book “Spiritual Midwifery” by Ina May Gaskin and read it alongside “A Child is Born” by Lennart Nilsson. She devoured them both and could not get enough!

“I see myself as a preventionist. I believe that holistic preventive care is the foundation of transforming birth outcomes for parents and babies”.

Her journey in childbirth began with the birth of her first child in 1985 and continued through 1997 with her fourth child. In addition to being a mother of four grown children, Susan is a proud grandmother to ten grandchildren, some of whom she has had the honor of delivering herself.

Throughout her career, Susan has served as a Doula and Childbirth Educator, assisting numerous families and mentoring couples through childbirth classes. She utilized information from Spinning Babies and Birthing from Within, making a meaningful impact on their birth experiences. As a doula, Susan attended births in hospitals, birth centers, and private homes, working alongside skilled providers such as OB/GYNs, Certified Nurse Midwives, and Licensed Midwives.

In 2003, Susan joined The Birthing Inn in Tacoma, WA as a midwife assistant and Childbirth Educator. This role broadened her perspective and exposed her to varied childbirth practices. Susan became deeply involved in the childbirth community, assisting and teaching, ultimately contributing to the co-management of The Birthing Inn. Her experiences over a decade inspired her to attend midwifery school in 2005, and by fall 2008, she became a licensed Midwife in Washington State, practicing the nurturing Midwifery Model of Care.

By 2013, Susan assumed the role of owner, operator, and clinical director of The Birthing Inn. She further expanded her influence by mentoring student doulas and midwives, helping to cultivate the next generation of professionals.

After selling the center in 2023, Susan refocused on caring for women and their families in a more personal setting, while also pursuing further education through programs such as the Gillispie Approach, Breech without Borders, The Breech Release Technique, and additional Spinning Babies training.

Susan continues to dedicate herself to supporting women and families, ensuring a gentle transition for babies entering the world.

As life evolves, Susan has recently embraced a more nomadic lifestyle alongside her husband Chris, who recently retired.

Susan has seamlessly integrated her passion for midwifery with her newfound love for exploration, becoming a traveling midwife by pursuing licensing in Hawaii along with her current Washington license. The status of Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) is recognized in many states, and is the gold standard for direct entry midwives.
